Woman of Courage: Collector's Edition Continues the Story of Little Fawn by Wanda E. Brunstetter

I am a huge Wanda fan and was excited when I found out that she was releasing a continuation to Woman of Courage!
From the back: A Woman of Courage Makes an Epic Journey

Take a three-thousand mile journey with Amanda Pearson as she leaves the disgrace of a broken engagement and joins the work at a Quaker mission in the western wilds. The trip is fraught with danger, and Amanda is near death before reaching her destination. Among those she meets are an Indian woman who becomes her first convert and a half-Indian trapper who seems to be her biggest critic. But love follows her into the wilderness and will determine the course of her future. You are sure to enjoy this historical romance adventure from New York Times bestselling author Wanda E. Brunstetter.

Included is the newly-written sequel, Woman of Hope, with Little Fawn’s story.
Raised as an orphan by a loving white couple, Little Fawn always felt something was missing from her life. She longs to take the news of Jesus to the Nez Perce Indians, but despite being a missionary herself, Little Fawn’s mother forbids it. Will White Wolf, her intended, support Little Fawn’s decision when she abruptly follows the tribe’s migration onto the Plains?

I really loved the addition of Little Fawn's story.  Now a grown young woman Little Fawn chafes under her mother's rules and longs to be a missionary to her people.  Little Fawn runs away but what follows is not what she hopes for.

Kidnapped, beaten and starved will Little Fawn be trapped by an enemy tribe or will White Wolf, the man she loves be able to save her?

The story keeps moving forward and there are many twists and turns in the plot.  Faith, courage, and love are interwoven in this beautiful continuation.

Pick up your copy today and enjoy another great story from a master teller.  Happy Reading!

The Amish Midwife's Secret (Love and Promises #2) by Rachel J. Good

I'm working with a vengeance here to get everything caught up.  The good news, is that there is light at the end of my tunnel!

Between multiple Dr. dashes I was able to grab a quick and very enjoyable read by Rachel J. Good.

From the back:  An Amish midwife and an Englisch doctor must embrace their differences to rescue a baby in need in this uplifting romance that will "capture your heart and leave you smiling" (Amy Lillard).

Kyle Miller never planned on becoming a country doctor. But when he's offered a medical practice in his sleepy hometown, Kyle knows he must return... and face the painful past he left behind. Except the Amish community isn't quite ready for Kyle. Especially the pretty midwife who refuses to compromise her traditions with his modern medicine...

The more Leah Stoltzfus works with the handsome Englisch doctor, the more she finds herself caught between the expectations of her family and her own hopes for the future. It will take one surprising revelation and one helpless baby in need of love to show Leah and Kyle that their bond may be greater than their differences... if Leah can find the courage to follow her heart.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, The Amish Teacher's Gift.  I was excited to see where this book took me.  I loved the reintroduction to Kyle and bringing him back from a previous book.  You can totally read this as a stand alone though.

This sequel was a real joy to dive into. Combining several good story telling elements: mystery, drama, romance, and faith. You step in and enjoy the world from the author's perspective.

The characters shine and the plot is immersive and moves at a great pace.  It's a great faith based romance.  For those who love Amish books this is a must read.

So pick up your copy of The Amish Midwife's Secret and enjoy a great story!  Happy Reading!

The Tory's Daughter by Angela K. Couch

It's been pretty hectic around here and I've gotten more behind than I care to admit but, thankfully I have some much need catch up time these next few days so I am getting up some reviews!

I've gotten to read the next book in a fantastic series.  From the back:
Burying his wife is the hardest thing Joseph Garnet has ever done—until he's called to leave his young son and baby daughter to fight Iroquois raiders. When one of the marauders tries to steal his horse, the last thing he expects is to end up tussling with a female. The girl is wounded, leaving Joseph little choice but to haul her home to heal—an act that seems all too familiar. Though Joseph doesn’t appear to remember her, Hannah Cunningham could never forget him. He rode with the mob that forced her two brothers into the Continental Army and drove her family from their home—all because of her father’s loyalties to the crown. After five years with her mother’s tribe, the rebels and starvation have left her nothing but the driving need to find her brothers. Compelled by a secret he’s held for far too long, Joseph agrees to help Hannah find what remains of her family. Though she begins to steal into his aching heart, he knows the truth will forever stand between them. Some things cannot be forgiven.

This has just been a fantastic series and I've really enjoyed each and every book.  The historic aspects of this series have been such a big draw for me.  Angela Couch did a fantastic job with the time period.

The book kept me pretty well sucked in and my husband often found me stirring dinner with the book, luckily he's used to me burning food!

The characters were well written and every time I though they were going to get a break another bend in the story happened.  The series truly keeps getting better and better and I enjoy reading about previous characters from the past books.

If you are a history lover, adventure reader who likes a dash of romance thrown in this is a great series.  So pick up your copy and enjoy! Happy reading!

The Christmas Prayer by Wanda Brunstetter

I love a good Christmas story any time of the year.  It's my favorite season and transports me away from all the Virginia heat!

This was such a nice read and a step away from the Amish fiction that Wanda fans know.  From the back: Beloved, bestselling author of Amish fiction, Wanda E. Brunstetter takes readers on a journey in 1850 along the California Trail.

Only the brave—or foolhardy—would attempt a cross-country journey late in the season. Three wagons meet up in Independence, Missouri, in April 1850, and their owners decide to keep forging ahead despite many setbacks and delays. December finds them in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when a sudden snowstorm traps them, obscuring the trail.

Cynthia Cooper is traveling with her mother and the man she has promised to marry. But as Christmas is upon them and they are hunkered down in a small cabin, she is forced to reevaluate her reasons for planning to marry fellow-traveler Walter Prentice. When a widowed father heading to a California ranch and a gold prospector both show an interest in Cynthia, she weighs her dreams for marriage alongside her responsibility to care for her mother. Can love win over her timid heart?

Cynthia is a richly drawn character and comes to life through the pages of the story.  Walter was a well written, but not really endearing character!  I like him a lot less as the story moved on.

There is a real eye to detail and historical perspective in the book that I greatly appreciated.  You felt like you were along in the journey.  I enjoy this time period in American History.

With twists and turns, faith, hope, and Christmas magic this is such a fun and satisfying novella.  So pick up your copy today and enjoy a great Christmas story!  Happy Reading!

The Rose and the Briar (Faraway Castle #3) by J.M. Stengl

Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved fairy tales.  She grew up but her love of the stories never ended.  She has passed her love onto her children.  Her youngest lives off the original stories in the Blue Fairy Book.

Her oldest loves retellings and has been reading every night with mama
The Rose and the Briar is book 3 in the Faraway Castle Series.  From the back:  Power-hungry princes are Rosa's greatest dread.

Deep within the gardens of Faraway Castle sleeps a secret Rosa the gardener has sworn to protect with her life--the legendary princess Zafira. For three years she has hidden the princess almost in plain sight. But two nosy princes threaten to undo the work of a century.

When asked to take his sister's old job as Faraway Castle's Magical-Creature Controller, Prince Briar leaps at the chance to disguise himself as a commoner, earn a place in the magical world, and be trained by the mysterious Gamekeeper. Nothing works out the way he'd expected, and he is far too busy working to gain Rosa's trust to bother about uncovering her secrets.

Until dashing Prince Javier of Evora pursues Rosa . . . and Briar suspects the rival prince of dark motives. Can Rosa and Briar learn to trust each other soon enough to prevent a magical disaster?

Will the kiss of a prince really awaken true love?

These have truly been great stories.  Not only are they just the right amount of the things I love (princes, magic, romance), they also keep an 11 year old boy involved (magical creatures, mayhem, bad guys).  There is an art and balance in doing that and these books deliver.  From Pookahs to Princes there was something that we both loved in the book.

Rosa is a complex woman and Zafira is, in the words of my son "a creep".  She really oozes evil even in her coma like state.  Rosa hates caring for her and feels inferior to her.  Rosa has great magic and brings gardens to life.

When Prince Briar shows up to train under the Gamekeeper Rosa tries to avoid him like a bad case of poison ivy.  Their playful banter was fun to read and they kept you guessing what would happen next.

Add in a few villains, plot twists, and a giant bear topiary who reminded us of Pooh both my son and I enjoyed our visit to Faraway Castle.  The book comes out this month.  So pick up your copy of The Rose and the Briar and get ready to discover the next chapter in this enchanted destination.  Happy Reading!

A Wells Landing Christmas by Amy Lillard

Sometimes everything lines up and you get the best of both worlds.  I had a chance to get to visit my favorite fictional town, Wells Landing AND it's written during my favorite time of year Christmas!!!  YAY!!!!

So come with me and let's take a visit to a place where there is a story on every corner and a community of faith and fun.

From the back:   As the most joyous of seasons comes to the Amish community of Wells Landing, Oklahoma, one young woman gets a chance to start again--and rediscover the gift of true love . . .

Families rejoicing together, caroling parties full of cheer, and church get-togethers brimming with delicious cooking and warm fellowship. Ivy Weaver would give anything to be a part of Christmas in Wells Landing. But one reckless mistake made her an outsider, and it's all she can do now to tend to her ailing grandfather and make a living. She sure doesn't need Zeb Brenneman returning to help after he abandoned her for no reason. He's working hard to make amends, but Ivy isn't sure there's enough faith--or still-sparking love between them--to stir her forgiveness...

Zeb knows leaving Ivy was the biggest mistake he's ever made. Even though she won't hear him out, he's determined to prove he's become the trustworthy, steadfast man she truly deserves. But bright new chances and surprising revelations will give him and Ivy choices they never imagined. And finding their way back to each other will be the most
challenging--and precious--Christmas gift of all . . .

Every book in this series gets better and better.  I come back to this series over and over again because I really love it.  Lillard brings the characters of this community to life.  Ivy is someone who I can see myself spending time with.  I feel for her as she goes through so much.

Zeb and Ivy both have to go through the path to forgiveness and finding each other again.  Can they see that the unique people in their lives as pointing them in the right direction or will they continue to hurt?  Will they be drawn together or torn apart?

A beautiful story of faith, forgiveness, family and Christmas this is one story you don't want to miss.  So take a trip to Wells Landing and enjoy another great book in this series.  Happy Reading!

The Hope Jar by Wanda Brunstetter (The Prayer Jars series Book 1)

I really enjoy unique Amish Fiction that stands out. I was excited to get a copy of Wanda Brunstetter's brand new book which looked like it was going to take me for a wild buggy ride.
From the back:  A Brand-New 3-Book Series from New York Times Bestselling Author Wanda E. Brunstetter.

What happens when making an elderly Amish couple very happy means going along with a lie that gets bigger by the day?

Michelle Taylor is not who her new family in Lancaster County believes her to be. The Lapps were looking for their long-lost granddaughter when they met Michelle and she assumed the identity of Sara Murray. Once homeless and hopeless, Michelle has come to love her new Amish friends and even considers the idea of romance among them.

Finding an old blue jar in the barn that is filled with slips of paper containing thoughts, quotes, and prayers by an unknown author becomes a boost to Michelle’s budding faith— but also convicting. How can she tell the truth without hurting the ones she has truly come to love?

Facing homelessness and an abusive boyfriend this story is a case of mistaken identity.  Michelle longs for a place to belong and people to love and care about her so she slips into a stolen identity.  As time goes on will Michelle confess?  What happens if the real Sara Murray shows up?

I truly enjoyed this story.   Wanda Brunstetter does a great job weaving the twists and turns you come to expect from her stories and characters you end up really relating to.  I spent a lot of time wondering if Michelle would decide to do the right thing or if she was going to get away with her deceit.

I found the Lapps really wonderful but thought they were a bit too trusting and jumped to conclusions about Michelle.  I found the ending a bit rushed and wanted more.  I can't wait for the second book to get answers to some hanging questions!

All in all this is a great read and definitely a breath of fresh air in the Amish genre.  So pick up your copy of The Hope Jar and hold on to your bonnet for the wild ride!  Happy Reading!

Lawfully Wanted (The Lawkeepers) by Jenna Brandt

So once in awhile a new book catches my eye and I decide to pick up a new to me writer and try something different.

Book Description: Levi Emerson and his partner, Clyde Forester, have been undercover for over a year chasing the ring leader of the largest cattle rustling group. After months of pursuit, they are closing in on their target, and looking forward to bagging their bounty. A paid informant has told them the the rustler's next target will be the Larsen Ranch in Rockwood Springs, Texas. When Levi arrives at the ranch, he poses as a cowboy in order to gain employment at the ranch and catch the cattle thief.

Abigail Larsen is the daughter of one of the largest cattle barons in all of Taylor, County Texas. She has just returned home from finishing school, and her father has plans for her to marry Andy Wilson, a local rancher and recent widower, in an attempt to expand the family's influence in the region. Though she wants to do her father's biding, the rumors of how Andy mistreated his first wife leaves Abigail worried about her future.

When Levi and Abigail accidently encounter each other on the ranch, the connection is instant, but they both know a relationship between them can never be due to their circumstances. Yet, as the couple continue to spend time together through various circumstances, the connection only deepens.

Will Levi catch his wanted thief and collect his bounty? Will he tell Abigail the truth about who he is? And will Abigail choose to go against her father in order to be with the man she wants? Find out if these two star-crossed lovers can find a way to be together in this epic 1880s historical romance.

This was a nice quick and easy read.  Abagail has been in Boston at school and when she returns is pushed into a marriage.  I felt sorry for Abagail and was cheering her on throughout the story as she looks to God's plan in her life.

Levi was a great character as well and he becomes drawn to Abigail.  Both share a strong faith and the tie that brings them together.  It was a well written love story and I truly enjoyed it.

Will Levi and Abagail be able to overcome the barriers surrounding them?  Will Abagail be able to forgive Levi when she finds out he deceived her or will she be stuck in an arranged marriage?  Pick up your copy of Lawfully Wanted and find out!  Happy Reading!

A Love for Leah by Amy Lillard (Amish of Pontotoc Book #2)

I'm always super excited when I get a new book from one of my favorite writers.  So when this gem showed up I couldn't wait to dive into it!

YAY!!  Leah gets a turn at her own story this go around.  From the back:  For the Amish of Pontotoc, Mississippi, faith can open minds—and hearts—to create surprising bonds for a lifetime . . .

Independent-minded Leah Gingerich has always been outspoken. And even though she is now a progressive Mennonite, she's rediscovering the joys of family traditions back in her Amish hometown. Yet she can't help but clash with her handsome new Amish neighbor, Jamie Stoltzfus. He's too hard-headed and old-line to see that his traumatized young nephew, Peter, needs faith and help—or that a woman who stands up to him may be what he needs to heal . . .

After a devastating tragedy, Jamie moved to Pontotoc with his nephew for a fresh start. Holding fast to his beliefs is the only way he feels he can aid Peter—and himself. But somehow, Leah's freethinking ways and feisty challenges are sparking a happiness he's never felt before. Soon, Jamie can't imagine his life without her. But are their differences ultimately too great to overcome—or can love bridge their way to a future together?

So first things first.  You need to read the first book, A Home For Hannah.  Think of it like this, you can go to a nice restaurant and get just a steak and be fine.  But isn't it much better to get the potato, salad, bread and dessert?  Some book series are like that.  You can just read this book and be fine, but to really understand and to have closer connections to what's going on you need to start at the beginning.

I loved Leah.  Amy Lillard makes characters that come to life.  They have flaws and you find yourself drawn deeply into her worlds that she creates.  You find yourself connecting with her characters as well and caring for them.  I felt deeply for Peter and Jamie as well.

There were a few places where I did want to bonk both Leah and Jamie.  They do argue quite a bit and that made me nuts.  The ending was a little too fast as well.  Maybe an epilogue to tie things together would have helped some?

Will Leah and Jamie find what they are looking for?  Will they trust in God to lead them in the right direction?  Pick up your copy of A Love for Leah and enjoy a great story!  Happy Reading!

Kappy King and the Pickle Caper (An Amish Mystery #2) by Amy Lillard

I have a confession to make.  I normally hate mysteries.  Like nails on a chalkboard.  My mom lovingly passed on her Nancy Drews to me and I lovingly shoved them in a drawer.  So usually I decline mysteries when offered but when I was offered a chance to review Amy Lillard's first Kappy King book I was intrigued, because I DO love Amish books.

I don't know what magic pixie dust was in Kappy's story but I was hooked.  Now Kappy is back again!

Kathryn "Kappy" King is happy being a plain-spoken unmarried odd-woman-out in her Pennsylvania Amish hometown. Her talent is making the special kapps local women use to cover their hair. But her skill at uncovering trouble in this quiet valley is about to be truly tested . . .

At first, young Sally June Esh's tragic death doesn't look like murder. Even in peaceful Blue Sky, collisions between buggies and Englisch cars aren't unheard of. Still, the Eshes are skilled drivers used to delivering their popular pickles for miles around. And after Kappy notices Sally's buggy was deliberately run off the road, her ex-Amish friend Edie gets strange texts saying the crash was no accident . . .

Kappy won't let her community's silence keep justice from being done. And even though a still-shunned Edie thinks of moving back to the city, she and Kappy start rooting out secrets about the Eshes' long-time neighbors--and new pickle-producing rivals. But when they learn that Sally's brother is secretly courting an Englisch girl, their investigation takes a disturbing turn . . .

You need to read book one, Kappy King and the Puppy Caper before you read this one.  You will miss a lot of references back to the first story.  It's also a really fun read and a great start to the series.

Kappy and Edie are just plain fun!  No pun intended.  Kappy marches to the beat of her own drum and together they are magic.  This book is a really fun light read and Amy Lillard shows her versatility in being able to write a cozy mysteries as well as great fiction.

With humor, twists and turns, and guessing who done it until the end (I guessed totally wrong), this is one mystery that won't end up in my drawer or yours.  So pick up your copy and enjoy a dill-lightful story.  Happy Reading!

Secret at Pebble Creek (Hope Chest of Dreams 4) by Lisa Jones Baker

I love a good series!  I get to spend time and invest in the characters and story lines.  When I heard that the Hope Chest of Dreams Series was going to have another story I couldn't wait to get my hands on it!

From the description:   Lisa Jones Baker's heartwarming series continues as a new generation inherits precious hand-carved chests that bring blessings of faith, love, and happiness . . .

When Jessica Beachy temporarily moves into the home of her late great uncle, Sam Beachy, she merely plans to remodel, sell, and head back to the city. She's used to busy St. Louis and can't imagine how she'll spend her time in the quiet Amish countryside. But the carpenter she hires, Eli Miller, doesn't think selling Sam's home is a good idea. And while he's steadfast in his Amish faith, he's instantly drawn to Jessica's vivacity and unexpected caring--especially as peaceful country ways make her question the dream she thought she wanted . .

But a lucrative offer to turn the house into a vacation retreat confronts Jessica with a heartbreaking choice. It will take trust, perseverance--and discovering a hope chest thought forever lost--for Jessica and Eli to boldly face obstacles and embark on a joyous future together . . .

So after I ran around and hugged my book I got around to the serious business of reading it.  I am going to start out by saying that you need to read the other books in the series first.  This book doesn't release until August-ish so you have time.  Yes, you could pick this up and read it but you are going to miss some of the back story lines and really miss out on getting to know the characters on a deeper level.

Sam and Esther were like ripples in a pond.  Their lives impacted a community and reached beyond to Jessica.  Jessica touched my heart with her story.  Broken, lost and wary will she find peace in her new community?

With a dash of mystery, a handsome carpenter, and old friends from previous stories this was a wonderful read.  With prayer and trust in the One who holds us in the palms of His Hands all things are possible.  Will Jessica learn to lean on Him and find the love, home, and family she's been waiting for?

Pick up your copy of Secret at Pebble Creek and find out!  Happy Reading!

Find out in this sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt from New York Times bestselling author Wanda E. Brunstetter, writing with her daughter-in-law Jean Brunstetter.

This book is the sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt which you should definitely pick up and read first.  The book can stand alone, but you miss some of the finer points and details.

Mandy and Ken now own a B and B in Hawaii.  Ellen is the main character and I really enjoyed her.

As we've come to expect with Wanda and Jean's books there are a lot of twists and turns that come out to surprise the reader.  The two make a dynamic storytelling team and it's always fun to see what they come up with.

I love a good collection and each one of these stories tell a unique tale but weave together well in the book.  I was especially drawn to Magdalene from Shenandoah Hearts.  She was spunky and I enjoyed her immensely.

The years span from 1754-1792 and the writers took a lot of time and effort in researching their work.  Take time and read the author notes, some have web pages and/or Pinterest boards with the actual history that they drew ideas from. The history buff in me appreciates the time and effort that this took.

This was a really great read and I enjoy the collections I get from Barbour.  So pick up your copy of The Backcountry Brides and get ready to ride back to a different era.  Happy Reading!

Romans - Journible the 17:18 Series (Journibles: the 17:18 Series) by Robert Wynalda and Dr. Joel R. Beeke

To purchase click here

I'm back on tour and this is a really unique book.  In this book YOU become the scribe and make a unique and personalized book.

Why the 17:18 series?
In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving final instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the scroll publishing house, but to hand write his own copy of the law. Thirty-four hundred years later, educators are discovering that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visually reading the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

How to Use These Books

Each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.

What I really liked about the book:  This book allowed my creative genie out of the bottle.  I got to write out the whole book of Romans.  There was no right or wrong.  This is a pretty unique concept and I really spent more time meditating on God's word.  There is plenty of space for my personal thoughts and I can pass this book down in the family if I choose to do so.

What I wish was different:  I have larger handwriting and there just wasn't always enough room for all the verses.  Some ended up getting squished and that makes the book not as pretty.  I also wish the reflection questions were a bit more in depth and stimulating.  I didn't feel like they helped me gain much new insight on Romans.

But I'll leave the final verdict up to you.  Follow the blog stops and enter to win your own copies!  Happy Journaling!

Woman of Courage (Audible Book) by Wanda Brunstetter

I had a long drive on our family vacation and needed a good audiobook to pass the time.  I was browsing through Amazon and found this book:

I was excited.  For several reasons, it's a book about Quakers and they don't get enough love (in my opinion) in the Christian fiction world, I can drive and still listen to a good book, and it's a Wanda book!  Yay!

From the blurb: Take a 3,000 mile journey with Amanda Pearson as she leaves the disgrace of a broken engagement and enters the work of a Quaker mission in the western wilds. The trip is fraught with danger, and Amanda is near death before reaching her destination. Among those she meets are an Indian woman who becomes her first convert and a half-Indian trapper who seems to be her biggest critic. But love follows her into the wilderness and will determine the course of her future. You are sure to enjoy this historical romance adventure from New York Times best-selling author Wanda E. Brunstetter.

OK, when I started listening I was a little concerned.  The audible narrator, Jaimee Draper, was a little extra perky and chipper.  Thankfully, she toned down as the story progressed and by the time we were halfway through she really was a fantastic Amanda.

Through the story Amanda is being refined and becomes, with God's help, a true woman of courage.  Spunky, caring, and bold in her witness Amanda desires to work with a Native tribe in a mission after being jilted by her creeper fiance.  Having to bury her father on the journey, going through several illnesses, and meeting a stubborn guide on the way Amanda begins to see that God's plans for her life are more amazing than she can even being to imagine.

The story starts out a little slow, but my husband and I were drawn in as it unfolded and we both enjoyed it.  So pick up your copy or recording and discover Woman of Courage!  Happy listening!

Love Amy by Amy Young

I'm on tour again!  Join me and my fellow bloggers as we explore a really fascinating memoir.  To purchase your copy click here

She came to China with a lesson plan. What she found was a new sense of purpose. Amy Young traveled to China in the mid 1990s to teach English to educators. But she never expected the profound way they would enrich her soul. With the influence of the enchanting country and its extraordinary everyday people, Amy extended a two-year assignment to nearly two decades far away from home. Starting shortly after her arrival, Amy shared her stories and her unique perspective through a series of letters. Her nine years of correspondence demonstrated a country going through growing pains: from political unrest to the SARS epidemic to budding prosperity. Amy battled language barriers, cultural faux pas, and invasive mice with nothing to lose. She even fought for her life with a potentially deadly illness, unsure if she'd survive to share her tale. Throughout her journey, Amy drew strength from God and came to appreciate the beauty and power of an ordinary life lived well. Love, Amy: An Accidental Memoir Told in Newsletters from China is one woman’s deeply moving journey of self-transformation. If you like humorous anecdotes, immersions in Eastern culture, and honest stories that aren’t afraid to dig deep, then you’ll love Amy Young’s heartfelt tale. Buy Love, Amy for an inspirational guided tour into the heart of China today!

I am an avid reader of memoirs and really enjoy diving into diverse cultures.   From battling mice to being operated on without anesthetic you are drawn into her world with her powerful storytelling.  Her descriptions of China are amazing and you feel that you are really there along side of her.  Proof that real life is so much more imaginative than fiction can be.

Guest Post from Amy Young
The tug for a life that is “Anything but Boring”

When I was in college the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Sarah Plain and Tall changed my life. You’ve probably seen it and been moved too. Sarah, a spinster by the standard of her day, moves from Boston to the fields of Kansas to consider marrying a widower and help him raise his children and work his farm. Her brother could not understand why Sarah would move from so-called civilization to the middle of nowhere. But the longing she felt for her life to matter resonated deeply with me.

I was in the liminal space between adolescence and adulthood. Like Sarah, I knew I could stay where I was and live a good life, but I wanted more. And so I moved to China.

Our world is one that loves big, change-the-world stories. I love them too. I remember reading The End of the Spear, the story of Jim Elliott and his friends who were martyred for their faith. I also lost myself in the stories of Gladys Aylward, William Carey, Lottie Moon, and Amy Carmichael. I remember reading about a missionary that had some worm pulled out of his stomach that was the size of a large snake. Disgusting! Fascinating! All for the gospel! The life of faith was exciting and God was on the move all the time! While it is true, the life of faith is exciting and God is on the move, it is also ordinary, boring, disappointing, and confusing. When I started compiling the letters I wrote from my days in China, I was embarrassed by what “first year Amy” said. She was so clueless, so uninformed, so willing to display her lack of cultural knowledge. I wanted to put my hand over her mouth and ask her to please pipe down because she did not really believe what she was saying. But she did, “first year Amy” could not know what “fifteen year in China Amy” knew.

These change the world stories I love? Turns out they have been more sanitized than I realized without showing the cultural and ministry progression that must have taken place.

Even now, knowing what I know, part of me wishes my newsletters contained miracles and throngs coming to Christ because of my work. I thought throngs and miracles were what a “real” cross-cultural worker would do. I thought that would show that my life mattered, like Sarah’s when she moved to Kansas. Don’t we all want our lives to matter? I believed that mattering was measurable. By compiling and writing this book the lesson Love, Amy has taught me is that too often we confuse size with significance. I still hear the whisper that says, “Amy, really? You wrote about the cultural beliefs that influence standing in line and you think that is worth people giving of their prayer, money, and time?” Part of me is reluctant even now to publish these letters because they are common. In truth, I am happy with my life and the contributions I have made. Of course I have regrets and wish I’d handled certain situations differently. But if all we hear are the spectacular stories, we can miss the gift our beautifully ordinary lives can be.

Who made it into the Gospels? A widow and her two mites. A boy and his few fish. She is described as offering out of her poverty. His common lunch was used to feed more than he could have imagined. Jesus did not tend to elevate those in power or those who seemed impressive.

My first year, a fellow teacher in China told me, “You’re lucky you’re still in your first year. Wait until your second year and you have told all your stories. You’ll have nothing to say in your newsletters.” Isn’t that the heart of what we fear—that we will have nothing to say with our lives? The secret to combating this fear is not that secretive. Show up and be present. Taken individually, these letters don’t add up to much, but put them together and much to my surprise, month after month I wrote an accidental memoir.

As ordinary as it is, I do have to say, life in China was anything but boring! If you love memoirs and want to hear stories that will make you laugh or cringe (and sometimes both), join me on a college campus in China.
